2011 Statutory Security of Supply Report laid before Parliament

08.11.11

Today Charles Hendry laid before Parliament the '2011 Statutory Security of Supply Report (SSSR)'. The report was produced jointly with Ofgem and with input from National Grid.

The report is intended to provide factual information to the market on the security of supply of electricity, gas and oil.

The report notes that electricity demand will remain stable (at 60GW), although it will be impacted by factors including fuel prices and energy conservation. The closure of coal and oil fired plants, as well as some nuclear plants, will also change the market.

Challenges to the medium to long term gas supply could include an increase in demand, as gas plants replace coal fired power plants.

Overall demand for oil is relatively static; petrol consumption is due to reduce, but diesel and aviation fuel are expected to grow significantly.
