Councils urged to support electric cars in 2011

03.01.11

Government Ministers have called on councils to drive an electric car revolution in 2011, by lending more support to green drivers.

They are pushing for the introduction of the Plug-In Car Grant; up to £5,000 off eligible cars; and vehicle charge points included in new developments at low cost.

Ministers hope people will adopt a more environmentally-friendly lifestyle if they’re encouraged to use the technology by government.

Communities and Local Government Secretary Eric Pickles said:

“With 84 per cent of journeys made by car, instead of pointlessly penalising drivers we want to make it easier for car owners to make greener choices on the road.

"We know people want to buy into the eco friendly car, but they need their politicians to catch up and bring in the infrastructure that makes it a feasible option.”
