Chris Huhne announces that the new ‘Green Deal’ will be a revolution
21.09.2010
Speaking at the Liberal Democrat Autumn Conference, Chris Huhne, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change announced that the new ambitious energy-saving scheme would radically overhaul the energy efficiency of homes and small businesses.
He spoke of UK homes being responsible for a quarter of all the UK’s carbon emissions as they ‘leak heat like a sieve’. He believes the key will be to stop waste to enable savings to be made on bills. The new ‘Green Deal’ will see companies paying up-front to insulate homes and recovering their outlay through the energy savings recouped.
It is anticipated that the new ‘Green Deal’ could create a whole new industry, helping to pad out the budget squeeze. In addition, an extra 250,000 jobs could be created to support the new industry. Chris Huhne calls it a pioneering ‘once and for all refit’ that will make every home in Britain ready for a low-carbon future.
