Prime Minister David Cameron pledges to make his Government the ‘Greenest Government ever’

David Cameron made a historic and ambitious commitment to cut the UK’s Government emissions by 10% in the next 12 months. He also supports this pledge with a promise to provide strong and decisive leadership on green issues.

A steering group has been established to ensure the delivery of the ambitious emissions target and coordinate the real-time online publishing of their energy use. This will mean that the chair of the steering group, Department of Energy and Climate Change Secretary Chris Huhne, can hold ministers and civil servants to account for their carbon footprint.

David Cameron said:

“I don’t want to hear warm words about the environment. I want to see real action. I want this to be the greenest government ever.

When speaking about the 10% reduction he added “And to those who say this is insignificant, remember this: the UK’s public sector has a bigger carbon footprint than the entire waste industry; if we do this, we’ll cut the Government’s energy bills by hundreds of millions of pounds.”
