Debate surrounds annual energy statements

19.11.10

Energy regulator Ofgem has told suppliers to start sending annual statements to their customers, to help them understand their energy use and what it is costing them.

The statements are to include information such as the name of a customer's tariff and a reminder that the customer can switch provider, along with advice on how to do so.

However there is some debate over whether these statements should also include information on the cheapest deals offered by the suppliers, allowing customers to compare these with their own tariff.

Ofgem, and watchdog Consumer Focus, agree that it would be difficult for suppliers to provide accurate information on the cheapest tariff for all their consumers.

But the Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC) is believed to be planning a change in the law to force suppliers to provide this information.
