Funding boost mooted for UK geothermal plants

Geothermal energy may find its funding boosted after figures show that the source could supply up to 10% of the UK’s energy needs.

Geothermal plants use turbines to draw up heat from deep underground, and are one of the renewable sources currently having their funding reviewed as the UK Government look to hit the 20% by 2020 carbon reduction target.

“Deep geothermal energy is an exciting renewable energy source with considerable unexploited potential” said Greg Barker, UK energy and climate change minister.
