Germany has become the biggest industrial power to give up nuclear energy, after deciding to close down all nuclear power plants by 2022.
The announcement comes in the wake of the Fukushima crisis in Japan, where a nuclear plant was stricken by an earthquake and a tsunami in March.
German ministers have been under increased pressure from mass anti-nuclear protests across the country.
German Environment Minister Norbert Rottgen said:
"It's definite. The latest end for the last three nuclear power plants is 2022. There will be no clause for revision."
