Climate change minister Greg Barker said that “[feed-in tariffs] FITs for offshore windfarms at scale would be the long-term replacement for the Renewables Obligation", at a Conservative Environment Network event.
Barker’s comment has caused the renewables industry concern, amid worries that investment could be stifled by having to get to grips with a new subsidy scheme.
Paul Coffey, RWE Innogy chief operating officer, said:
"Government says people tell them a FIT may be preferable to the Renewables Obligation, but I and my peers in industry disagree," he said. "I'm not sure where the momentum for a FIT has come from."
"We have ten years' experience with the Renewables Obligation. We are comfortable with it and we're investing in the UK quite heavily on the back of it,"
