UK shadow energy secretary Meg Hillier has accused the coalition Government of “shelving” its Energy Bill, a key promise in the run up to last year’s election.
The Energy Bill contains the Green Deal, the energy efficiency scheme to allow consumers to make improvements to their homes, and pay for them using the resulting savings on their energy bills.
The scheme is planned to come into force next year.
Ms Hillier said:
“We should not be surprised that Ministers at the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) have lost their argument with the government’s business managers, and the centrepiece of climate change policy has been sidelined.”
DECC maintains that there is no change to its plan to bring in the Green Deal in October 2012.
