7,500 companies face fines under CRC

22.07.2010

According to a Reuters report, some 7,500 companies are expected to miss the 30 September deadline to register for the carbon reduction commitment (CRC) energy efficiency scheme.

The report issued on Tuesday 20 July states that 40% of companies included under the scheme were unaware of their obligations and could face fines of £5,000 each.

According to the government, the scheme will help cut annually by 2020 UK greenhouse gas emissions by 4 million tonnes and corporate energy bills by 1 billion pounds. The mandatory scheme forces businesses like banks, hotels, hospitals and schools to register with the Environment Agency and monitor energy usage.

David Symons, a director at WSP Environment & Energy said;

"Our findings indicate that a lack of awareness and engagement among participants could prevent thousands of companies from complying with the scheme on time."
