Smart meter roll-out could be halted by the government

01.11.11

A select committee inquiry session yesterday raised concerns over the Government's plan to roll out smart meters in the UK by 2019. Richard Lloyd, Executive Director of Which?, voiced concerns that poorest households will be the least likely to engage with and benefit from the roll-out.

Moira Wallace, DECC permanent secretary, admitted that the Government may “pull the plug” if progress reviews planned for 2012 and 2013 demonstrate serious problems with the roll-out.
