Businesses benefit from tracking their greenhouse gas emissions

30.11.10

British businesses stand to save money, and improve their reputation with their customers, community and investors by disclosing their greenhouse gas emissions, according to new research.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) report found that tracking emissions moved environmental discussions into the businesses’ boardrooms. This in turn triggered environmental awareness and behaviour change, with benefits across the organisations.

Environment Minister Lord Henley said:

“I am pleased to see that the many companies already voluntarily involved in reporting GHG emissions are finding the process beneficial to their business and investors. I am also delighted to see that the act of reporting is encouraging attempts to reduce emissions.

“The next steps for Government will be to consider the findings of the report. We’ll be announcing a way forward in early 2011.”
