Climate change. Don't be left in the dark
The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) have estimated that 20,000 large public and private sector organisations will be affected by The Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme (CRC). Those eligible must legally comply or face hefty financial penalties.
By adopting a well-thought through approach to energy efficiency in the workplace, you can ensure your business reduces it’s energy bills and also the impact it has on the environment, in preparation for the CRC.
Below are some simple tips that any business can adopt to start making a difference to energy consumption and bills:
Turn off equipment when not in use
- On average, offices waste £6,000 each year by leaving equipment on over weekends and bank holidays. PC screen consumption can often represent 1/3 of the electricity consumption in a modern office. Encouraging your employees to turn off their monitors when they leave at the end of the day can make a huge difference.
Use technology to save you money
- By installing infra-red presence detectors in your office(s) the lights will switch off when rooms or desks are unoccupied.
Energy efficient light bulbs
- Replace all light bulbs with energy efficiency bulbs. They will use around a quarter of the electricity and last up to 12 times longer than a standard bulb.
Think before you print
- Ink-jet printers use 90% less energy than other printers. Also if your business needs to do a large print run, encourage employees to think about whether this could be done during off-peak hours to save money.
Check for draughts
- Draught proof all windows and doors. Poorly insulated window frames and single glazed windows can loose 20% of your heat.
Buy energy efficiency approved equipment
- An energy efficient fridge could save you up to £45 a year and it will reduce carbon dioxide output.
